Cuba earned a second Paris 2024 quota place in the 25m rapid fire pistol men event thanks to Jorge Alvarez, who earned silver on the final day of the CAT XIV Rifle and Pistol Championships in Buenos Aires.

The 34-year-old computer engineer from Havana, who won the individual Pan American title in Lima five years ago, finished second to his 46-year-old compatriot Leuris Pupo, who secured a Paris 2024 quota place at these Championships of the Americas two years ago.

Pupo dominated the final at the Argentine Federal Shooting Range, finishing with a total of 30 hits.

Alvarez secured the vital second place by finishing one hit ahead of Peru’s Kevin Altamirano Farfan, who settled for bronze, and eventually finished eight hits behind his fellow Cuban.

Cuba has thus won three Olympic quota places at the 2024 Championships of the Americas – through Alvarez, 25m pistol women silver medallist Laina Perez and 10m air rifle women bronze medallist Lisbet Hernandez Hernandez – bringing its total so far to four.

A total of 168 athletes from 21 countries participated in an event which can be accessed here: https://play.tycsports.com/polideportivo/copa-de-las-americas-tiro-dia-1-id573834.html
